I disagree.

The actual problem is that both sides argue like complete idiots on social media, putting up extreme positions that only fire up their base but which even the less extreme members of their own side wouldn't want to touch with a ten-foot-pole.

Social media is incredibly divisive, with everyone on this, "Either you agree with everything I have to say and you agree the other side is pure evil or you are pure evil too" crap. It's not surprising that methodology doesn't win hearts and minds.
