No, we should never respond to anything with violence. Not only is it inappropriate it's counter productive to the peace movement to respond to violence with violence while representing peace.

Would they turn to violence after years of peacefully and legally requesting their grievances be heard? Would Abraham Lincoln give orders to kill Americans to protect Americans?

All peace is bought with violence. Lincoln ordered and commandeered the killng of 700,000+ men (not counting women and children) in order to destroy slavery and secure peace and freedom on the USA. Thomas Jefferson slaughtered English forces to put peace and independence to the USA. You get the point. If we want peace we must show we are strong enough to have it -- or else we won't.
