NBA seeks 1 percent cut of all wagers should sports gambling be legalized

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has long been open to legalized sports gambling, so long as its regulated properly, and it now appears the league has finalized its plan on how to do just that.

The NBA is seeking 1 percent of all wagers made on its games if sports gambling is federally legalized, an attorney for the league told a New York State Senate committee on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. Pending a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the matter come spring, the NBA will also reportedly push for its expansion to smartphones and other real-time alternatives to casinos.

“We have studied these issues at length,” NBA attorney Dan Spillane said in a statement to lawmakers, via Windhorst. “Our conclusion is that the time has come for a different approach that gives sports fans a safe and legal way to wager on sporting events while protecting the integrity of the underlying competitions.”

Integrity fee :troll:

And what's to stop them from arbitrarily increasing this fee periodically.
Ehhh....you can structure the contract such that that don't happen.

I dunno why this is surprising to folks, ain't no way that pro sports gambling gets legalized and the leagues DON'T expect a cut. Greed rules.

I'm guessing the NFL sitting back like, "yeah, we want FIVE percent, nikka..." :birdman:

Prolly stating 1% to catch attention. No way they agree solely to 1% without the chance to increase if they agree to a contract, prolly closer to 3-5%.

What I highlighted in your post... Truer words never spoken

No one would take any bets if they are required to pay 1% on every bet taken, regardless of the book wins or loses on the bet. It’s absolute insanity. Why would any state agree to it? Any tax should go to the state, and it will be far less than 1% of the overall betting handle. Nevada does something like a 0.25% handle tax. There’s just not enough of a margin for a tax like they want right off the top. If they lose the Supreme Court case the leagues will have zero say anywhere. They might have played hardball too long and will be ultimately left out

And what's to stop them from arbitrarily increasing this fee periodically. If they wanna get a cut, put some money down and make their own sports book.

Takes money to make money:yeshrug:
Can’t. That’s the reason they want a tax on the betting handle and not the revenue. The leagues can’t make it look like they have a hand in profiting off the winners and losers of the actual games. Can’t say they want integrity and also offer betting or want cuts of overall earnings. Nba can’t have its own book, and then make more money off certain teams winning.
