You do have to be a stupid hypocrite to give Simone Biles a pass for withdrawing for mental health reasons but ignoring the litany of trying mental situations and stresses that world class athletes are introduced daily. It's the same dudes that crack jokes about Kevin Love on a daily basis even when he has blatantly open about his mental health and how he has constant thoughts about suicide. They stay picking and choosing which athletes mental health issues they choose to take serious based on whether they like said person or not.

As always, there's no middle ground here. No, she's not a national embarrassment. She has every right to pull out for mental health reasons. The issue is that every gymnast on that team takes the same risks as Biles. They can all get lost in the air and become paralyzed if they land badly. That alone has to be mentally taxing. They all share the pressure to perform at a high level. If Biles performed to her usual standard does she still pull out is the question.

Also, Kevin Love withdrew for mental health reasons and well, he didn't quite get the same amount of sympathy.

Whenever an athlete steps onto the floor, the risk of injury is there for everyone involved. Biles isn't the only out there that has a chance of injury regardless of the moves that she's performing.

You realize that it’s possible to praise athletes for dealing with intense pressure situations while also acknowledging that they’re human, sometimes deal with issues that go beyond sports and not fall into the lazy “they’re mentally weak” narrative when they fall short, right?
