I think it's actually a sincere gesture to acknowledge the child as being a fundamental part of the relationship going forward. You can't have it both ways...we talk about the exploits of some of these women by saying "where were their fathers?" but then lambast nikkas who're actually making an effort to be father figures in some of these babies lives.
