Japan has been living with the problem of women being disgusted by their men and their men giving up on dating and losing ambition all together.
Their population is now shrinking. Seniors are starting to outnumber babies and may soon outnumber the young men. If the trend continues, there will be a ton of seniors with nobody to take care of them. No tax revenue from the work force. Their economy may implode.
The connection thing is definitely true. #1 reason why so many men are paying for Webcam and onlyfans type interactions is because these content makers are actually bridging that gap by providing a service that is personalized. Porn videos doesn't give you that personalization or connection, but content creators do. These sex workers are providing customer service to these jack off sessions now. 1on1 type services as well.
