does the soul council have any classic albums because I don't see how they don't

shyt weird to me.
Tbh I've found the production on Rapsody's albums bland as hell, I thought the production on Add-2's "Jim Crow the Musical" was better than what he had on albums he dropped under Jamla. Something's missing with that crew, imo.

That's your man, so I'm not going to get super funky about it. I just find his music to be an approximation of something that already existed, that doesn't hit at all, but almost captures the feel of the thing you really do want to hear. Kind of like how Target will have the Dove Hypoallergenic Body Wash for $7, then will set up a display of their own generic brand of body wash for $3.99 that says "compare to Dove Hypoallergenic Body Wash." Then one day you bite, and say "fukk it, I want to see what this is about - I mean, they say it's just like the shyt I always fukk with." But it doesn't foam up quite right, and the scent is off-brand, and the shower experience is thrown off entirely.

I legitimately get the vibe that dude is down to earth and authentic. He strikes me as the type of cat who is earnest, and dedicated to his craft, and... just doesn't have it, man. Sometimes it happens. As a lyricist he's abstract in the worst way - not in the direction of creating mystery and opening up meaning, but in the direction of incoherence, and not really executing his concepts. Voice-wise, the nikka is a straight sedative. Musically, holy shyt is there a lack of imagination. Dude couldn't be more generic. Rhyming over the Substitution drums ad nauseam; on this album he revisits a classic high-energy Jaylib sample and makes it sound soft and dull; he's waxing philosophical about trap rap over a Nautilus sample in 2021; and not only does he do something on this album as tired as sampling Roy Ayers' Everybody Loves the Sunshine, but somehow it's a chop of it that sounds worse than anything I could've imagined made from that song! Everything about this dude - lyrics, concepts, music - screams earnest square. I'm happy he has his loyal following, but I can't imagine listing him as even a 7th tier MC in the NYC rap genre.
That eloquent ether :whew:

But not a single lie told. One of the few rappers I should like but it never happens.

Nottz is in The Soul Council too, and they just picked up Sndtrk.

Young Guru doesn't engineer for them, though. He's officially a part of the crew as Director of Operations, but I don't think he's mixed any Jamla projects except for possibly Laila's Wisdom or Eve by Rapsody. I should've fact checked before saying that he did those, though.

Honestly, a couple sample flips on here feel a bit overdone.

Bob James, Roy Ayers, The Free Jewelry flip which is itself like a flip of a flip because I think it's the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson's cover of Dilla's work.

Skyzoo is great and I consistently champion him on here but I think he like Lupe fiasco can "Show his hand" so to speak.
Especially with his on the nose references to "Dilla beats" and trying to contrast the triplet trap flow with the 4/4 boom bap flow.

I honestly think he'd be even better with a consistent and strong executive producer overseeing the project and someone pushing
him for an even better performance on the mic.

I think his "Bluest Note" ep is an example of the possibilities for someone like Skyzoo.

Yea Syzoo loves rapping over that Nautilus sample

:picard:

So finally... @Walt your post was so powerful you actually made me re-evaluate some of my own opinions. :heh:

I mean, what can anyone really say to that? You basically dismantled Sky in a very polite way that made it clear you were very familiar with his music. One thing you touched on, that I don't really admit much, is that his complex lyricism is definitely a bit confusing. There's a lot of his verses that honestly I don't understand. And I'm pretty good about deciphering meaning in abstract art, but I actually prefer a lot of his earliest music, because it seemed a little more grounded. Songs like Stop Fooling Yourself have plenty of meaning and aren't over-the-top dense in the process.

And I realized that on songs where he collabs with other artists, I tend to remember their verses a little bit more, even if their verses are less lyrical.

So yeah. I don't really know what to say, except that even though I still like Skyzoo, you've definitely made me look at a couple things in a new light.
