Slack CEO: Microsoft is 'Unhealthily Preoccupied With Killing Us'

Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield claimed earlier this month that Microsoft Teams isn't a competitor to Slack. In an interview with The Verge, Butterfield has revealed that, inside Slack, the company feels that "Microsoft is perhaps unhealthily preoccupied with killing us, and Teams is the vehicle to do that."

From a report:
Butterfield expands on why he thinks Microsoft is "unhealthily preoccupied" with Slack and compares Teams to more of a competitor to Zoom. Slack obviously has its own voice and video calling features, but it's not the primary focus of the app, and often, businesses integrate Zoom or Cisco's WebEx instead. Microsoft has been moving businesses from Skype for Business to Teams, which traditionally focused on voice and video calling. Ultimately, Butterfield thinks Microsoft is trying to force the Teams comparison because "Microsoft benefits from the narrative that Teams is very competitive with Slack. Even though the reality is it's principally a voice and video calling service."

What is SLACK???:dahell:
It is like a collaborative messageboard type thingy. We use it at my job to exchange information on various topics. We have topics/channels that people create with a #. Like #finance, #events, #general etc. and you subscribe to a channel if you think it is related to your job/duties.

i would love to know how microsoft is selling teams to companies. My company just switched to teams after using slack for a year. Everyone loved slack. I still think its better since we use zoom anyway and dont need teams video/audio call feature. I wouldnt be surprised if microsoft is funding companies cancellation of their contract with slack. I truly dont really like using teams that much and im cool with change. but the channels and being able to create them on the fly in slack when i a new project pops up was crucial. whereas teams feels super clunky to me

It actually like really weird how Zoom has just taken over the video conferencing game. Is it that much more superior to google, Skype, Windows, etc.?

From what I have seen, no.

But it's easier for the average person to use. Lower barrier of entry.

I’m not sure what Microsoft is doing but Slack has been dropping like a stone in the markets. They are burning money fast and I’ll be shocked if they are here in three years.

Microsoft has been burying slack by packaging it with thier office suite.

Slack was gaining a lot of steam in government agencies because it was a good collaboration/communication product. We were using it for teleconferences and group chat.

Microsoft saw that momentum and simply rolled out thier own inferior product and packaged it with the office bundle. The higher ups weren't willing to pay for slack if they got a similar product that was already packaged with office subscription.
