I was listening to NPR back in December. They did an interview of him and the interviewer mentioned to him that he attended the play and noticed that the audience was essentially all white.
Harris talked about the pushback that he received from the black community regarding the slave theme. The interviewer said something to the extent of “well is their some historical truth to this or are these relationships based off of contemporary examples that you’ve seen?”
Harris basically admitted that the black/white, slave woman/white master dynamic in the play is strongly based off of the gay interracial relationships/sexcapades that he had while attending Yale.
