A new bill would calculate potential costs of reparations — and by Yahoo Finance estimates, these could reach as high as $17.1 trillion.

The bill’s focus was not to pass reparations, but to research the impact slavery had on black Americans and develop proposals for redress.

The subject of reparations has remained a political hot potato, with presidential candidates Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Beto O’Rourke and Julian Castro supporting some form of reparations. But while the Democratic-controlled House is willing to hear the bill, it seems likely that a bill on reparations will die in the Senate where Republicans have a majority. When asked about the hearing, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said he opposed the measure, given that “not one of us currently living are responsible” for slavery.

McConnell continued, adding: "We've tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We elected an African-American president.”

“Payments are not the focus of H.R. 40,” the congresswoman said. “Knowledge is the focus of H.R. 40.”

“The Majority Leader may want to deny this bill a hearing, but he cannot deny the horror and the denial of freedom that human bondage represents,” she said. “The Majority Leader can't deny the free labor that slavery brought; he can't deny the people who died in transit; and he can't deny that this is the 400th anniversary of the beginning of the slave trade.”

“In particular, the legacy of colonial history, enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism and racial inequality in the United States remains a serious challenge, as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent,” the report states.

Contemporary police killings and the trauma that they create are reminiscent of the past racial terror of lynching. Impunity for State violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.”

H.R. 40 co-sponsor Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) says that reparations aren’t about “playing victim” or “race baiting”.

“If the best policies are informed by data, the data supports the fact that black Americans continue to be in the bottom of every outcome when it comes to health, education, and economics,” Pressley said in a statement to Yahoo Finance. “So much work remains to be done in order for us to bend the arc of justice to ensure the full freedom for black Americans.”

So we can now shut up all the people who say its impossible for America to calculate the cost of Reparations. Yahoo finance did the job for them.

I can't embed the video that is on the webpage but yall should check it out. You see a black/biracial debating with two white people about if ADOS deserve rep and that they know of a lot of white people who didn't benefit from slavery. However the lady in the middle handles their deflections beautifully.

Yahoo is now part of Oath

How many articles they gonna write about "studying" the impact of slavery and reparations costs :stopitslime:

Where's the article about cutting the damn check?!

If we were LGBT or Jewish, the article would read "The checks will be cut October 2020 LGBT/Jewish community" :hhh::mjlol:

You owe the descendants of slaves backpay for what their ancestors did. Plain and simple, no argument or discussion to be had. fukking white people are always like that, some of them do the dirt, then the ones from much later on get to have the moral highground and look down their noses at everyone else since they themselves reap the benefits. such an ignorant, cowardly people.

I posted about this exact point a while ago.

Low key...it's almost like she copied my whole shyt.:ohhh:

.
:patrice:Brehs...

I'm going to be objective. I have questions. I've NEVER been a proponent of financial reparations. I've ALWAYS been a proponent of reparations in the form of services, subsidies, improved institutions & environmental changes in the communities that make up a large number of descendants of those who were enslaved & subject to Jim Crow laws(South) & Redlining(North).:jbhmm:

However, brehs are hellbent on the "Either support the #AADOS position of financial reparations or fukk your c00n ass" type of stance.

Cool. :ld:

I need to know that the push for financial reparations aren't just an attempt at creating a goal that ensures the black community are forever angry about not obtaining.

So, I need clarity in order to support. :feedme:

The Numbers -
  • Total U.S GDP - $15 trillion(+/-) as of 2010. Source: Google Public Data
  • Total U.S Federal budget - 3.55 trillion(+/-) as of 2010. Source: GovInfo
  • Total U.S Population - 308 million(+/-) as of 2010. Source: U.S Census Bureau FactFinder
  • Percentage of U.S Population that identified as Black - 14%(+/-), which, in 2010, would total 43.1 million. Source: U.S Census Bureau
  • Estimated Number of Americans who identified as having ancestry from Caribbean immigration as of 2010 - 2,672,753(+/-). Source: U.S Census Factfinder
  • Estimated Number of Americans who identified as having ancestry from Subsaharan African immigration as of 2010 - 2,847,194(+/-). Source U.S Census Factfinder
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That would mean, the estimate of Black Americans who are direct descendants of Africans brought to the U.S as slaves - [(Total Black Population)-(Total Blacks Americans w/ Caribbean or African Immigrant Ancestry)] - 43 million - 5.51 million =

37.5 million African Americans who would have a claim to U.S reparations for its role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade if going by AADOS requirements. :dwillhuh:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue:

Okay, so, if my math is correct, if U.S reparations for slavery were given in 2010, the U.S would be required to divvy up a total compensation package among that 37 million.:merchant:

Now...how much is this amount that we are talking about? The total GDP in 2010 was estimated at $15 Trillion.

The Federal spending budget was around 2.3 Trillion in 2010. Source: GovInfo(page 7).

What is the U.S Dollar worth if the Economy is crippled? I say that because, unless people are seriously considering a nuclear option of dedicating the U.S's entire GDP value to reparations, the compensation amount will be an amount that would probably make the actual individual reparations package meaningless in the grand scheme of having a goal of realignment of African American descendants of slaves.

Would $60,000 per AADOS be enough for the U.S to be able to say it's washed its hands clean of the blood of slaves? Would $60,000 per AADOS be enough for there to be a renaissance in the black communities of America leading to a big blow to the current instances of institutional racism that exists in the U.S? Would $60,000 per AADOS be enough to justify a hostile break in the nexus of unity between African Americans and other members of the African Diaspora?

Please, someone help explain how this works?

**IF ANY OF MY MATH IS WRONG OR IF THERE IS A BELIEF THAT I'VE PLAYED WITH STATISTICS IN ORDER TO ARGUE AN AGENDA, PLEASE CALL ME OUT ON IT. I DON'T WANT TO BE RIGHT, I WANT TO BE ACCURATE. PLEASE GIVE CREDIBLE SOURCED MATERIAL FOR ANY ADJUSTMENTS YOU BELIEVE NEED TO BE MADE FOR THIS DISCUSSION TO BEGIN AMICABLY**

17.1 trillion would be a start :ehh: but this is sensationalism to scare folks out of the possibility of reparations. It's a load of shyt.
Or to get people to think they’re getting a check.

Rather than give us a check get rid of taxes out of our checks for 10 years and forgive student loan debt for blacks for their first degree they pull loans out for

Honestly, tax-free income is the most realistic form of reparations we can expect. There will never be a direct wealth transfer that we deserve ($17 trillion is a base TBH). Tax free income should be for way longer though, at least 100 years.
