you sure they didn't mean it as "black american" versus black nigerian or black immigrant?
b/c at times when 'black' by itself is used in the USA its in reference to blacks with ancestry dating many generations in america specifically (i.e. "black culture", "black music", "black history") and not necessarily meant to include, say, Nigerian or Ghananian or Ethopian culture or music or history... even tho those groups are also black.
so if a nigerian (or any african) says he aint 'black', i'm thinking it as they're doing a lazy/misleading job of stating they arent african-american, even if in their own mind they see it akin to pointing out they aren't kenyan/angolan/south african/or of any other country not their own that they may be residing in. the wordplay of 'black' can get messed up depending on the context and usage of it.
