They took heat but they were respected by people in both parties. Hell, at the end of Bush's first term there was speculation that Powell was going to enter into the presidential race. I remember in high school, the MOST liberal anti-bush teachers talking about if Powell enters the race, it would be over for Bush. Many people thought he was going to be the first black president.

The black republicans of yesteryear were accomplished. They may have taken heat but people at least respected their position and experience.

What black Republicans today are respected by people from both sides of the aisle? What black Republicans even have 1/4 of the credentials of the old black establishment.
