This was way better than the first one imo. The first one was just ok to me. Like a lot of horror movies these days. I heard (regarding the first film) "this is the best horror movie this year" (in a year full of other overrated/not really memorable horror movies), or even "this is the best horror movie I've seen in years since ____".
I didn't even remember what happened in Smile 1 going into this one. Smile 2 is a solid 8/10 movie. There may be some takeaways from part 2. But it's better than part 1 in damn near every way. I didn't see any trailers, or reviews until after I watched it. I haven't heard anybody, not even one reviewer say 1 is better than 2. And most (if not all) of them loved part 1.

Smile 2 is better imo (they are two completely different kinds of films). Can't go wrong with either though. Both are great on first watch, and both surprised me.

Would throw Strange Darling on there too, although it struck me as more of a Tarantino-style grindhouse thriller. Can see it being talked about as a horror due to a motif but it’s not really shot like a traditional one.
Red Rooms is another good one I’d place in the horror-adjacent realm.
