Just hadn't really seen him in anything a' note since...*checks IMDB*...that Grindhouse nonsense back in '07.

I think he's pretty much on the same level as his homie John Carpenter in the sense he feels like he's had a good run and accomplished what he wanted to do. But whereas Carpenter is "semi" but pretty much fully retired, Russell still does movies for the hell of it.
