Chronic & doggystyle will never be topped because of the great team behind it.
They all gave their best and the quality control was strict af.
Snoops verses were so ill because dre & doc wouldnt let wack shyt slide, by no one there. Theres also an interview where snoop talked about the fact that they also did some weak lyrics/verses but you simply didnt hear them because they had to re-write them until they were up to the standard there. And of course D.O.C's influence was essential for snoop being on top of his game. Theres n interview with him (D.O.C) where he talked about how he helped snoop becoming a real songwriter as opposed to just a very strong mc/rapper. He said that in the beginning of his career (around 1991) snoop had sick rhymes & lyrics but he didnt know how to structure a song, writing huge verses with like 48 bars, also containing some filler lines, or something with no knowledge on how to really fit them into three verses, where to put bridges, and how to end & start a new verse. You can hear that pretty good if you listen to old snoop songs (before deep cover/Death row) on his demotapes etc. Thats why during that time period d.o.c was like a teacher to snoop, he talked about how snoop would bring those endlessly long lyrics to him and he would tell him where he should end one verse & start another, which lines were wack/filler and made him write new ones until they were tight, and sometimes also putting like 4 bars from the last verse at the beginning of the first verse & vice versa to make it sound more cohesive/in tune with the concept of the song. By the time they got to make doggystyle Snoop had really internalized what d.o.c told him and was experienced as a song writer creating cohesive themes & verses like on MWTC. And of course Dre was like the biggest perfectionist, he would make Snoop & the others do some takes like a dozen times until they were perfect.
What harms some of snoops later work is that the quality control was never the same as on the row. For example the "Da Game Is To Be Sold..." album was completed in like 2 weeks, and I seriously doubt that there was anyone over at NL who would stand up and tell snoop something like "yo that verse is wack, write a new one" or "do this take again, it doesnt sound 100% perfect". No D.O.C & Dre to make sure that everything was tight/creating a good creative environment is what holds some of snoops albums back from being classics/10/10. Theres no other album besides "doggystyle" which doesnt contain at least 1 filler song. Even 8-9/10 albums like "top dogg" & "last meal " had them (do you think Dre would let shyt like that boring love song "Somethin bout yo bidness" on top dogg or that completely misplaced "Back Up Off Me" joint, that wack ass "I cant swim" or the failed song where snoop sings the whole time on Tha Last Meal slide?). Thats why he never reached this peak again, the atmosphere & the team behind his work was never the same again.

Yup. He has it all. Classic albums, was part of major runs, longevity, respect among his peers, living legend, our generations Bob Marley....

Tbh, even tho its nothin new, its crazy to think how charismatic Snoop-y is. Dude, to me, is 1 of the definitions of charismatic (Muhammad Ali, 2pac etc are other examples). Especially to me
who's the opposite socially. For w/e w/e reason i've built up a shell to where im extremely reserved most of the time & been on some "fukk it/fukk everybody" type shyt. And carry some bitterness prolly due to certain events & disappointments.
But Snoop can fit with any crowd. I know they say he was a shy coming up, and it was noticable in his early days, but thnx to artist development (that no longer seem to exist) he grew out of it.
Snoop can literally fit in with the middle age old white people in their 50's - and still come off smooth & cool just bein himself. Unlike most of us he dont need to use his "white voice/lingo".
On topic;
Definitely top 20 to me. Nothing will ever measure to Doggystyle of course, but people sleep on his catalogue mostly cuz they compare it to his 1st joint. His flow & lyricism obviously hit a dent after Death Row, which is part of the problem, but he was still delivering good shyt after.
