They could have also introduced a new character like Nightwing in the DCEU and built up some new stories around him so they don't have to rely on batfleck but no. Nightwings one of those characters universally well loved by the fans but still has not broken through to mainstream audiences.

I think Nolan always had a trilogy in mind but Ledger's death changed things.

It's not hard to imagine he was checked out after that and wanted no part of making a 3rd film, but the pressure from WB & fans made him feel obligated to do it.
