There were completely free public colleges. There were also "essentially" free schools due to the GI Bill. Both excluded Black people.

And college debt *then* was less of a burden than *current* student loan debt.

There was a free college in NY in my era.I don't remember the name , but I think it was an engineering school, and I'm sure it wasn't part of CUNY or SUNY.
