Whilst on a curious surfing spree online......I saw one of these stupid infographs;

LINK (click on link then Click on the infograph to further enlarge it so its readable)

As you can read/see its making what seems to be several ludicrous claims, among others. "Sitting increases risk of death up to 40%". Honestly it sounds like one of those scare headlines that is completely BS, Also the listed sources at the bottom (references) don't really provide a journal to review. With some lazy searching I was able to find an article and one referenced journal. They do seem to say that too much sitting is unhealthy, even accounting for other lifestyle and exercise habits, but I'm still skeptical....Can anyone here provide a more informed/ LEGIT viewpoint about such articles & their hypothesis?

The quote I made earlier just sounded so ridiculous that I refuse to believe it, but honestly I don't know enough to judge whether it's quack science or not??!!!:ohhh:

Well I'll say this much. People have been sitting for thousands of years. And alot of people have lived a very long long time. I deduce that sometimes you need to just sit your ass down.

:ohhh:.Agreed but like I said some of the claims made on that infograph seem absurd...I mean "Sitting increases risk of death up to 40%":why:...I know the picture article is placing emphasis on excessive sitting... with points to back...anyways just consulted google & got the following;

There are two main concerns with sitting for long periods of time.
1. Blood can pool in your legs, causing a host of negative side-effects.
2. Maintaining a seated position for long periods of time can cause muscular imbalances such as tight hamstrings and hip flexors, abdominals, chest and shoulders and a weakened mid/lower trapezius, rhomboids, and spinal erectors. This greatly affects standard living and the ability to exercise.
Really it's the holding of one position (lack of movement as mentioned above) that is the issue, not the sitting. However, most people can't maintain standing for 9 hours a day, whereas sitting can be done easily.

:ehh:.......I guess this gives us more reason to lie in bed now :stylin:

My wife has serious imbalances that have taken years to correct... look up upper and lower cross syndrome

Sitting is fine as long as you do activities that counter its effects. It definitely creates weaknesses and imbalances.

i dont think its the sitting thats such and issue its the lack of activity that has dwindled down over the years

add in sugary drinks, and higher calorie cheap food and you got a relatively flabby populace
