Lil' Kim?![]()
I don't know man. "Nelly" run was HUGE. "Country Grammer" actually sold more records than "Get Rich" and is the highest grossing debut rap album of all time. I'd argue that Nelly's entrance was just as big if not bigger than 50. The biggest difference was 50's, along with Big, Snoop, X and yes Drake was an instant success were as Nelly was like a slow crawl but he blew big with "Country Grammer".

50's entrance into hip-hop was How to Rob. That track has as much controversy with it as his Murder Inc/Ja Rule related stuff. It was covered by EVERY music outlet at the time in that he basically pissed off the whole hip-hop community. It was still being promoted as such TM/Columbia/Sony.
Then you got the shooting, Ghetto Qu'ran, Ja Rule fight in ATL, the stabbing, touring with Nas, Power of the Dollar shelved, dropped, then 100 million G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-Unit mixtapes. All of this was before Get Rich, so pretty much the whole world new who he was 4-5yrs before that album.
- but he knew who he was.Why do people sleep on Lil Kim's impact? Just look at Nicki doing her best "I'm Lil Kim" Impression and you see her influence is still being felt. Before Lil Kim, Female emcees were dressing like Dudes with baggy pants and hoodies. Kim made Females, FEMALES in Hip Hop. She was the one that made it ok for a Female to be sexy and rap. All these chicks took from Lil Kim's blueprint. She's easily one of the most influential female rappers of all time. "Hard Core" changed the game for Female Emcees. Yes Biggie was the mastermind behind her and he should get some credit too but Kim was the face. Just look how influential this promo poster was from "Hard Core":

Nah...Curtis' SECOND intro into the game was all marketing. It was, "Hey America! Check out super gangsta, shot nine times and survived, Eminem approved, Dre on the beat 50is Cent!"
Calvin came into the game spittin' that smooth gangsta shyt on Deep Cover and had everyone like. Then G Thang, the Chronic and Doggystyle? Calvin Lion definitely takes that crown.
What does that have to do with recycling a marketing plan and image?
When 50 Cent first came out with Power Of A Dollar no one gave a fukk. When he became "controversial" in all the same ways that worked for Tupac, he blew up.
Bias has nothing to do with it because its clear that the idea to promote the fukk out of being shot was something they did with Tupac, the idea of having him the 'head' of a rap crew was something they did with Tupac/Outlaws, being shown in a ton of pictures with a bulletproof vest on and that wreckless 'thug' attitude was something they did with Tupac. When they needed singles they didnt just randomly choose the exact same 2 people who did '2 Of Amerikkaz Most Wanted' and 'California Love' to work on his first 2 singles.
Facts are facts breh.
How to Rob wuznt 50's controversial way of being noticed?meanwhile Pac simply did his thing and Dan Quayle bought his name up....guess u gon act like Keep Ya Head Up and I get Around never came out
...yes NOBODY wuz checkin for Pac yet 50 wuz known for music without controversy
...I never heard of that nikka before how to rob,and that wuz the only song I knew off til he reaapeared with Wanksta....people didn't even know when that nikka got shot outside of NY
hate it or luv it but u knew when that shyt happened with Pac for a reason...people were checking for em.
...the Pac comparison wuz definitly part of the marketing plan...just like it wuz DMX and Ja Rule....Pac made 3 NY nikkas careers get over it...may not have been part of they plan but it wuz damn sure apart of they labels marketing gimmick....pac killed NY and gave y'all life back when he died...say thank u and keep it movinand then 3 years later he was irrelevant musically and commercially. shows what good marketing can doAround the time GRODT dropped I've never seen such buzz from a hip hop artist ever. Everyone and their mama was talking about 50 and that album. I've never seen no shyt like that.
