Good.catch. Didn’t realize Chuck was using the triplet flow back then.

Of course he was. New Yorkers invented hip hop and had a damn near 10 year headstart on everyone else. ALL styles of hip hop originate in New York city. But some styles got abandoned, other regions picked up on it late or deliberately took outdated styles and built on them. Even the Southern type beats... Mantronix was doing that shyt. But Mantronix got thrown in the bushes when a 'smarter' and more rugged style of hip hop production emerged through Marley

The Migos are from Atlanta

Atlanta rappers have been using that flow on and off since the 90s. I'm sure there are plenty of underground Atlanta rappers you coli cats have never heard of.

That flow is something that comes natural when you rap on certain southern and mid-western Hip Hop beats. Most of these beats will not allow you to rap like RZA or Lord Finesse, you have to have a different style. That's why east coast rappers sounded so out of place in the late 90s and early 00s when they were featured on a southern track.

Same thing with most west coast artists. Mack 10 had a group from Chicago that used this flow and when he featured on one of their tracks he sounded like shyt even though he was one of my favorite rappers.

That flow is a style that has been used in the mid-south and mid-west for almost 30 years. I was raised on this flow.

They have a few youtube videos where they break down the history of that rap style. A lot of people credit Three 6 Mafia.

I can hear Three 6 doing that as well. The thing is, Chuck was spittin' like this in 1986-87 so technically, Three 6 got their style from him as they didn't come out till 4 years later. Gonna check yt for more info on this, breh. Thanks for the heads-up.

Knew what song it was before I even clicked. Don't really have an opinion on this but these types of threads are always interesting.

Is that who made Just Ice beats? Because if it is I can confirm for a fact that this is the style that influenced what later became the South's style of production.

Listen to this, then listen to 'Bring the Noise' from the 1:07 mark and I think you'll hear what I did......

I swear it's the exact same flow just a faster tempo.

That’s actually anapestic, where the second syllable is stressed in the triplet. I think Chuck was using Dactyls, where the stress lands on the first syllable.

All still triplets though

All I'm saying is that the first person to use it commercially was someone from up here on the East Coast. Knowing how old it actually is doesn't mean the South is guilty of 'biting' since, you're correct, it sounded odd at the time up here and wasn't popular, but it fit in extremely well on that record.

Yes, he even shouts-out to Mantronix on this track.....

Well there is a cat from Memphis named DJ Spanish Fly who made beats and he predates Paul and Juicy, Squeeky, and everybody else from Memphis. He stated in an interview years ago that he was influenced by the beats from Just Ice's album, the percussion anyway. I can definitely hear that connection.

But you also have to factor in Bass music influence somewhere too.
