It was Gil-Scot Heroin but I believe the actual claim wasn't that bad. It was a peak Warriors vs. peak Lakers thread and he said that Draymond could cover '87 Kareem (when Kareem was 39). I don't think "shut down" were the exact words he used, and considering how well Draymond defends larger players, it seems plausible that he could have covered him.
People act like Kareem never faced 6'7" centers. Wes Unself was a good defender against prime Kareem, but Draymond couldn't guard 39yo Kareem? In his old age he could barely get off the ground and shyt like this happened:
Wes Unseld was one of the strongest men in the history of the league. Wide and low center of gravity. Impossible to move as an offensive player trying to establish post position. I think Willis Reed defended taller centers well for similar reasons.
And they played in center dominant era.
Dray is actually a good defender, but his time in the league corresponds with the RULE BOOK explicitly encouraging perimeter play and discouraging low post play. The tempo, the high rate of three pointers shot, AND playing with the best shooting backcourt of All time points to Dray's defense of post players not being comparable to what it would have been in Kareem's era. Teams abandon any semblance of interior play once Warrior get a 10 point lead.
Old washed up Kareem was high IQ , multi skilled big with considerable height and reach advantage over Dray.
Dray's defensive prowess was overblown by whoever said that he could stop post prime Kareem.
It was a hot take, that aged badly.
