I don't think she's trying to be cute or sexy necessarily.
Seems to me like she's trying to be mature and expressive about her sexuality, a subject that means a great deal to her as someone who has endured sexual abuse and has probably had to work pretty hard to over come the guilt and repressed emotions that come along with it. The fact that it's such a huge deal tells you that it's a lot of grown folks with grade school mentality about sex.
