so for all the drake hype, he has only sold 5 million albums worldwide?

What's more garbage about that statement is adding Pitbull into the conversation. Pitbull really is an internationally known artist, but his output is crap. Might as well say "Ha ha ha Drake only sold X and nobody knows him outside the US .. but look at Pitbull, that's real hip hop, he's the man, everybody knows him!"

Focusing on sales alone is a sucker's game.

The numbers given by the OP are incorrect for the most part but its true that worldwide numbers arent that great relative to America for most acts that arent straight pop like Rihanna. In most big markets outside the US, like Canada, UK, Japan, Australia, selling 100,000 units is a big success. For rap, u can add the Netherlands and France but we are talking about a 60k market at best concentrated in the big cities. 50k first week in the UK is a good week. LA alone is alone is a bigger market than the UK. The money is in touring where people turn up in a big way and pay a lot of money to see the artists.

Drake is anonymous outside of North America, no one knows who he is.

Pretty sure he just toured Europe and played in arenas.. he played o2 arena with a capacity of 20k....

Make blanket statements with no factual evidence to back them up lol

1) Drake has sold more than 5 million albums worldwide. In the US TML sold 1.7 million, Take care has sold 2.1 million, and Nothing was the same is already past 1.5 million. That is 5.3 million from just the USA alone

Actually yes I would believe that. Drake barely goes platinum in the US, and he's not a worldwide phenom. He's just a popular US rapper, that doesn't go that far.

2) Drake does sell internationally. "Nothing was the same" Debuted in the top 5 in the US, Canada, Denmark, Australia, UK, Ireland, New Zealand. Also reached the top 10 in the Netherlands and Sweden.

3) People that are "Not a worldwide phenom" do not do an 18 stop tour through Europe at massive arenas in 2012
http://www.rap-up.com/2011/12/13/drake-announces-club-paradise-tour-dates/
Then go again 2 years later in 2014 for 23 more shows
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Would_You_like_a_Tour?
Doing 6 massive stadium shows back-to-back in England alone, 3 of which were in London and sold 50,000 tickets between them, completely sold out
11 Drake, The Weeknd O2 Arena London, U.K. March 24-26, 2014 $4,272,630 50,832 / 50,832 3 / 3 $164.84, $74.18 Live Nation

4) While 7 million total WW may not seem like a lot, what other rapper not named Eminem comes even close 2010-2014?
Kanye would be closest with about 4 million, Jay Z and wayne behind him with about 3 million each. So being that it is a horrible sales climate, drake is well above everybody else

funny thing is most of y'all are arguing are wrong.... being top worldwide ain't shyt.. cause nothing sells worldwide like it does in america...

GRODT didn't go diamond in the states... none of 50's albums did... when he says it sold 11 million, he means worldwide.. which they only count diamond and other sales as US for plaques... but it did sell 9 million in the US... so in our country the shyt sells 9 million... in the combined entire rest of the world, it only sold another 2 million..

look at thriller... sold 29 million in the states.. the next closest country was the UK with 4 milliion...

look at those ratios... so you can believe if you going gold over here.. most likely you're a nobody across the world... and if you doing plat and double plat here.. you might be selling 500k worldwide

the mistake the TS made was... you forget single sales, features and being tied to 2-3 other multiplatinum stars in baby, wayne and nicki.... and now rihanna. they might not buy his music.. but they damn sure know who is he and come to the shows to see him

which brings me to something else... ny to la is far.. but it's all the US... take that same distance in europe and you just flew over 40 different countries

so when you have a tour like that.. and all i have to do is hop on a train for 3 hours and see an artist who might not be around again for 3 years....... it's a little different then me being in dc and he gonna be in ny, pa, nj, dc, va and nc all in the same week, and i know it'll be 10 more like this next year where i can see him

which is why international tours are always in stadiums and sell out quick and artists make more money
