So how did atheism become a trait of intellectual people?

It's not that atheism is a sign of intellect, but more so that Christianity is a sign of gullibility and naivety. I remember being about 6 years old and reading the Bible with my father and it said folks were 600, 700 and even 800 years old. Even as a child i was like:comeon:"100 year olds can't move today but 800 year olds were walking across the desert back then?".Lost all interest in the Bible after that; but so many Christians read shyt like that and see no problem with it. These are the type of people you can't have an intelligent conversation with.

Christians are the most arrogant, self- righteous and covertly hateful people on earth.

im not atheist, im agnostic but this makes sense.

Religous people SURVIVE and THRIVE on faith and hope. By definition its not guided/misguided. also they typically reject opposing opinions on theism blindly.

there is no logic in religion.

atheists on the other hand, have made the firm decision to believe that when we die NOTHING HAPPENS. no heaven no hell no afterlife. its a terrifying thought and no one takes it lightly. despite their fear, they choose facts (or lack of facts). fact is god is not a fact. its faith.

religion can be a beautiful thing and I HOPE there is a god and an afterlife, i really do. But i dont have any facts. its all faith and hope.

no offense to anyone but religious people come off as delusional to me.

Some call it Letsism.

Anyway, here is a study from two years ago stating that 32% of Atheists & Agnostics believe in an afterlife just not g-d.

Survey: 32% of Atheists & Agnostics Believe in an Afterlife
Survey: 32% of Atheists & Agnostics Believe in an Afterlife

A survey compiled in 2014 by The Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture (AISFC) reveals that 32 percent of Americans who identified themselves as agnostics and atheists believe in an afterlife of some kind. In addition, 6 percent of the same non-theistic group expressed a belief in a “bodily resurrection”. These numbers were taken from a sample of 15,738 Americans, all of which were between the ages of 18 and 60. According to the data, 13.2 percent of Americans identify themselves as atheist, agnostic, or some other variation of non-believing.

I found these results to be quite surprising. Having been immersed in circles of atheists and agnostics for the past 20 years, the numbers revealed by this study are higher than I would have guessed, by quite a lot. What stands out the most is that 6% expressed a belief in resurrection. It could be a statistical anomaly of some sort (perhaps the respondents did not understand the question about bodily resurrection?) Why an atheist or agnostic would believe that a dead person could come back to life seems entirely contrary to their worldview.

But as the authors of the survey admit, the results are far from a definitive. From the introduction of the report:

“We recognize that any analyses of these issues are incomplete, and this report is no exception. All analysis builds on previous work, and we are grateful to the many researchers whose work has helped us to shape and position this report. The sections, or questions, should not be thought of as comprehensive as more thorough examinations consonant with academic journal articles or book chapters. Additionally, this report is not peer-reviewed. But we hope that the research featured here adds to growing interest in research in these fields, and that others who come after will find this data and these analyses useful in shaping their understanding of the complex issues that shape American families and society.”

The concept of an afterlife is a very powerful idea, even to people who you might otherwise think differently. Agnostics and atheists are human beings with all of the same inherent biases, flaws, and sacred-cows which are standard equipment in a human brain. People innately want to believe in things which make them comfortable, such as death not being “the end” of a person’s existence. That is a very po

I couldn't have said it any better.

I won't call myself an athiest but what made me really lose faith is really understanding how much we want and wish for a God and afterlife, similar to how kids want there to be a Santa Claus.

I'm jealous of religious people, tho. I honestly believe I was a happier person when I thought I was going somewhere after death. Now, it's frightening to think that my existence can be snapped in a moment.

Or you can make an argument that all this evil goes unpunished if there is no higher power to Judge.

Which I also cannot fathom, hence to maintain balance I believe in the most high.
Why is this so hard to fathom?

And do you realize that whatever properties the universe exerts it does so with complete indifference to whatever is going on inside of our primate brains.

I’m from a very religious family and went to church every weekend. I just started questioning the shyt I was reading—and I read a lot. Til this day, I know half of Psalms by heart.

Once you start questioning ideology, you go down a whole you never come out of. A lot of people are scared of that hole because the “light” gives their mediocre lives inherent meaning.

I’m not arrogant and I don’t know it all. I just know that the answer isn’t in some book—full of plot holes and contradictions—some skymassa put together AND gave to elites to teach to the common man. This shyt was put in place to keep us in check and control our behavior.

nikkas will steal, cheat, fornicate, lie, kill but still have the audacity to look down on someone because he or she doesn’t believe in a god he himself isn’t following lmao.

because it’s easy to take shots at people who believe in some master authority somewhere as explained to them via religious institutions...

I’d say a large majority of people on this planet believe in some type of God.

So the “intellects” decided to go against the grain

Intellect has nothing to do with religious belief or the lack thereof.

I’ve met ignorant religious people and I have also met ignorant non religious people.

Even the bible says that WISDOM is the principle thing to achieve and strive after.

Intellect is nothing more than vast amounts of information gained over time.

However, wisdom is the ability to appropriate and utilize the knowledge you’ve gained.
