Can anyone speak to a typical day to day as a developer/engineer? I don't want to get into a field that grinds you out. I've also heard that job security in the field is iffy, any opinions on that?
I can tell you a little bit. I've worked as an engineer writing software for brakes in passenger vehicles; meaning that I did not just sit at a desk all day.
I spent about 10% of my time in a vehicle, 10% in meetings, and 30% of my time in the lab, and the remaining half at my desk working my simulator/test-bench.
I typically get requirements from the architect or the scientists to either make software feature updates, or to add new or different parts to a vehicle.
I make sure I understand what they want and then go about my business making the software to adequately respond or control the input.
