I actually did not hop on the hype train because I heard him for the first time on the XXL Freestyle and that was just bad.
So by coincidence because my boy asked several times 'did you check out Anderson Paak yet', I listened to Malibu for the first time today (I can prove this, it's a pure coincidence OP made a thread today).
First impression:
wow, he must REALLY like Bilal (remember him?)
Some songs, beats, background vocals are almost a copy of Bilal's style, at least he's heavily inspired, also by the Neptunes.
But then I heard 'The Season/Carry Me' and I was like... 'ok wow this is dope!'. Had that on repeat a few times.
Listened to more, my conclusion is: talented artist with strong producers/musicians around him, heavily inspired by some great artists and groups maybe even a little too much. Has content. Doesn't just rap about nonsense. Not a huge fan of all the 'off beat' production stuff, but overall I think he's got a lot of potential and creativity to give.
