He attacked them for completley distancing themselves from issues related to black people period. Not wanting to (at the time) stand up for any issues concerning race. For better or for worse that is one thing Nas HAS done whether it was rallying against Fox News with Change.org, speaking up against the violence in Chicago or recently working with Google and Microsoft to develop funds and grants to get more black and latinos involved in the tech industry. Its come with some respect and its got some people thinking he's preachy but either way he's been willing to speak up.
What Nas has done from a commerce standpoint is not necessairly in conflict with that. A Hennessey deal isnt the same as turning down a coors ad. And if such social responsiblity is expected of grandstanding rappers then I'd like to see why people arent focus on Public Enemy doing stuff Nike, Ice Cube with Coors or KRS-One with Sprite. In all those cases we kept perspective, that's pretty much the same deal here.
If the organisers of the Preakness are a new group of people looking to make change, bringing in diversity to their crowds by introducing black music acts such as Nas, thats a win. In fact I just googled up the history of musical performers that have been coming the last couple of years and its more diverse than before with Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Murs, Pitbull doing it in the past. For a pure Hip Hop and black act like Nas to do it, doesn't that only reaffirm that this old white event can't deny than America is getting more diverse and tanned by the years ?
Why not let an ambassador to Hip Hop like Nas do the show and reaffrim the change?
