Honestly when I decided to resurrect the Official Grammy's thread this year I didn't do it with the thought that "Kendrick had BETTER win AOTY or else" mentality. Don't get me wrong I WANTED him to win no doubt, but we all know Hip Hop isn't very well represented in the so called "Major" Categories. What DID make me happy was the fact that, after several years the Best Rap Album category was televised. That Kendrick used his platform to represent both present day innovation as well as the legendary architects of the genre (Shouting out Snoop and Nas as WELL as their magnum Opus classics which went completely ignored by the academy at the time) that Kendrick put on an Amazing performance. That Kendrick DID win FIVE awards. There was plenty of black excellence on display tonight

The Weeknd

Best R&B Performance- Earned It
Best Urban Contemperary Album- Beauty Behind The Madness

Kendrick Lamar

Best Rap Album- To Pimp A Butterfly
Best Rap Song- Alright
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration- These Walls
Best Rap Performance- Alright
Best Visuals- Bad Blood (shared with Taylor Swift)

D'Angelo

Best R&B Song- Really Love
Best R&B Album- Black Messiah

Common

Best Song Written For Visual Media- Glory (shared with John Legend)

- Kendrick Lamar won the MOST awards tonight of all nominees (5)

-Kendrick Lamar is the FIRST West Coast Rapper to win Best Rap Album

-Kendrick Lamar had the most single night nominations of Any artist, and the second most of all time behind Michael Jackson

-Common is the Only rapper to win a Golden Globe, Oscar, NAACP, and Grammy Award for the same song (Glory)

-D'Angelo won Best R&B Album. The same award he won SIXTEEN YEARS ago for his last album, Voodoo.

And she still on the Versace payroll

Just got that Intel commercial also. She's pretty much stormed her way back into it if she drops a 2016 album. I'm not even mad though because she's mega-talented, however she will get extra favor for other reasons during next year's awards shows.

Are y'all young or just have goldfish memory? These guys have absolutely no merit when it comes to judging Black music and they do the same thing every year: Use the hip hop/RnB crowd to draw in the audience, then give the award to some cac. It's beyond :russell: at this point.

I walked in the door just in time for Kendrick's performnce !

Kendrick knows he's GOAT. It doesn't matter anymore.

/thread

"You don't gotta tell me that I am the one" :wow: It's safe to say, Kendrick doesn't need an award to prove his greatness. Still, for me, I can't front, I would've liked for him to win AOTY TPAB was such an amazing album from top to bottom. I really think he'll win one eventually if he keeps putting out this amazing music.

IMO they're different situations. The Grammys has a few plays, as I keep saying brehs.

-The best seller/crowd favorite: Taylor Swift (twice), Adele, Daft Punk, Outkast, etc
-The veteran win: Robert Plant, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, etc
-The faux indie win for credibility: Beck, Arcade Fire, etc

Beyonce was the best seller/crowd favorite last year but lost to the surprise indie pick for credibility. It's like a game of rock, paper, scissors and each one has a near equal chance to win.

Kendrick doesn't fit any of those categories, he was never going to win.
Taylor Swift was not the crowd favorite the first time she won. Beyonce and Gaga were. She also had an awful live performance that night. It is regarded as one of the worst Grammy AOTY wins of all time.

Vet win: Correct - but they do this more often when a urban album is about to win (see MMLP, LR, Beyonce, etc.)

You're overthinking the Indy thing. Rock voters just vote for rock albums because they think they're better artists. In the absence of that, they go for the biggest pop star. It's almost exactly that simple. Beyonce was a robbery because she sold the most records and was the most critically acclaimed in the category. She was the easiest win ever. No one else will ever have that trifecta (sales, acclaim, biggest impact on the year all belonging to one artist).

:russell:

The bytching is so corny at this point, stop giving these cac approved gold statues so much damn importance over their validity of BLACK music

Agreed. But its still worth noting. Black female pop stars like Beyonce being denied yet here come another CAC female just eating up these awards. This shyt as bad as the Oscars. Love it or not Beyonce had the biggest selling album of 2014 or close to it and was critically acclaimed as all hell. If that don't deserve album of the year Grammy, and that is their usual criteria. The years when Grammy wanna switch it up usually coincide with denying a black artist.

This is about what I expected.
I'm always happy to see an artist recognized for their work
but if it doesn't happen then so be it.
Kendrick got a few grammies tonight so I'm good.

Grammy people look at radio hits to pick their winners..if they really cared about music, they would nominate the right people
