Really now?:whoo:

@CashmereEsquire and @LiberianGirl...in terms of investment opportunities, what's the country looking like in that regard? From the outside looking in, infrastructure appears to be the main concern. I hope I'm phrasing my question properly.

Also heard that Firestone has a large influence in the country, is that the case?
There's a lot of potential for investments here especially given that we are rebuilding from this mess. Real estate/construction/oil (the big companies already got oil locked though). And I tell people all the time you don't even have to be innovative, just take ideas from other countries (since we're so far behind) apply it to Liberia and voila.

I dont think this actually happened. I searched this before and can never find anything on it besides st0rmfr0nt links. I think its just a racist lie.
It's not simple, but it's true. However, Tolbert is widely considered to be better off than Doe who was just a dictator that was propped up because he was a Reagan puppet. Some of the reason why Ghanians hate on Liberians today is because during the 60s and 70s Liberians looked down on Ghanians because they were so advanced. Now Ghanians do it to Liberians in African.

Firestone had a huge plant back in the day, idk how it is now. Land is cheap, I plan on buying some in the next 5 yrs. But you gotta have people there because its so much corruption, that you can think you bought land then the land you paid for someone sold it to 5 other people. My pops built a house and has about 10 acres of farm land that one of my cousins takes care off. I was talking with my uncle and he was like the person that can bring Fiber Optics to Liberia will be a billionaire. On a larger scale I`m thinking of how I can make an impact there from a Technology stand point, similar to how Ghana has become.

Yea Firestone is still big here.

Where are you looking for land? I'm trying to buy some too, but there are so many people just sitting on their land it's hard to get in the areas close to the city.

One company is rolling Fiber Optics out now...Govt owned.

Have you seen the Vice documentary on Liberia? :lupe: What did you think about it and was it accurate?

It mostly focused on the civil war and that guy who was a cannibal though.

Frontline had a good documentary about Firestone and Charles Taylor, they got some land for their rubber plantations for cheap and became the largest employer in the country. I think they also have some cruise liner that use the country as their primary registration, the firm always shows up on the largest companies in Africa list. Taylor "escaped" from jail in the US in what are mysterious circumstances and he was a destabilizing force in the region. I saw a video of Prince Does men taking some cabinet members (apparently Americo-Liberians) and shooting them at a beach in full view of the public. There is also one of their leaders who got deposed and had his ear cut off before he was assassinated in full view of the public.

This is from Wikipedia, for what it's worth:

Based on the system of racial segregation in America, the Americo-Liberians recreated a cultural and racial caste system with themselves at the top and indigenous Liberans at the bottom. They did believe, on the other hand, in a form of racial equality which meant that all had the potential of to become "civilized" through conversion to Christianity and education.

I'll see if I can find another link
