http://411mania.com/games/411-games-fact-or-fiction-destiny-gamergate-more/3.) You were surprised at how smoothly Destiny’s launch went.
Sean Garmer – Fact: In an age where we’ve come to expect server crashes, online components going down, and games having bugs, there was none of that for Destiny. Kudos to Activision and Bungie for making sure they had everything in place, which I’m sure the mass of people that played the beta helped them get a feel for how they could handle launch. However, it all could have gone wrong for Bungie, but luckily it didn’t and I’m sure things going smoothly only helped further sales from people being told by their friends that the game works great. Whether you really enjoy the game, like I did, or you found it to be repetitive and boring like others, it doesn’t change the fact that Activision and Bungie came prepared.
Stephen Randle – Fiction: I am no longer surprised by smooth launches of online games. We have so much data now on launches of similar games, that a company being unprepared, especially for an AAA-level game like Destiny, is simply unacceptable. More importantly, if you can’t keep an online game up, there are plenty of other options, and people will flock to them instead.
Score: 1 for 3 - I have come to the point where I always expect online games to have issues at launch. The fact that it went smoothly is nothing short of amazing to me. It just shows that AAA online game launches can be done smoothly.
