I see why it's easy to believe that. Very easy. But you have to be a bit careful in what's said and the way that it's presented.
First of all, you should notice that his statements were divorced from any sort of context, just a quote and then Maadow repeating how bad the quote is and then another anchor piling on, with senator Ted Kennedy also piling on.
First of all some context:

And I also barreled on and said that that is true; the NAACP and other civil rights organizations, when they leave the basic discriminatory questions and start getting into matters such as foreign policy and things of that nature and other political issues — and that is probably something I should not have said, but I really did not mean any harm by it.
The case that's widely touted as evidence of him being racist for prosecuting blacks for alleged voter fraud, the people who hired him were black themselves. That should let you know immediately who is lying. The next question should be why are so many people lying for him?
And this grandstanding by Booker absolutely confirms that he's a crook. How can he talk out of both sides of his mouth? We have clear evidence.
Was he joking when he made that award presentation? Or was he joking when he was assailing Sessions?
These two things are totally incongruous. How can he explain it?
He's also someone that was integral in reducing the crack sentencing laws form 100-1 to 18-1 (not great but about a 400% decrease)
This man doesn't seem to think he's a racist.
And neither does this one:
