Mexicans face racist backlash constantly over things going on at the border but we’re supposed to believe those people are now being considered white???? TLR stays on the bullshyt
And then you see our Haitian brothers and sisters get it even worse when trying to come here. We can’t deny how racially discriminatory certain policies are for one group of people and then get offended when we get hit with the same shyt. That’s why this line of thinking is dangerous. It doesn’t mean I wish to claim them as black lmao :mjlol:. People don’t see the play though, they caught up on how light they think this woman looks.

So there’s some conflation of nationality, ethnicity and race going on here. I’m guilty of it as well so I’m not pointing fingers. It’s admittedly complex. I don’t think this is our problem so much as I recognize the political ramifications of letting the “they’re white tho!!” narrative slide. We may not have identical experiences but an overlap exists. Especially in certain regions/“melting pots” of the country. When we talk about wealth disparity, educational gaps, wage stagnation etc. Collaboration is a good thing but that’s obviously deemed dangerous to certain people.
That’s fair. And I get the argument. My issue is that I feel like other groups do tend to focus on their own interests and plights in this country unless it’s in their best interest to side with us. And while I don’t necessarily think it’s harmful for us to see this issue the way you and others do, I think based on our own issues and status in this country, our concern should be focused on issues that pertain to us. While AOC may not be 100% European and is a mixture, she is still not a bw and I know she’s never identified as such even though she’s supportive of us.

Do you think her mom looks a lot like Nancy pelosi? I do… AOC looks more ethnic and may not completely identify with whiteness but she also obviously does not identify as one of us either. Also not that it matters but shes in a serious relationship with a wm, so if she does see being called white as a slight, it apparently doesn’t extend to who she dates.

I appreciate her support nonetheless and I don’t have any real issues with her or any person of latin heritage, and I do think there is some similarities between their experiences and ours in this country. But I do think that focusing on others the way we do (and again I see us doing this more then any other nonwhite group) is strange, it also can be perceived as weakness. We are always looking for kumbaya/unity with other groups while they are more invested in their own—I believe we should be. But I digress. What’s interesting is that when I talk to other bw they don’t look at this issue the way Brehs do in this thread.

we don’t see solidarity or a kinship with those nonblacks of Latin descent even if they have similar experiences as we do in this country, so we tend to see them the same way as we see whites—as others.
