In the Silver Lining
This thread proves how confused this site is when it comes to latinos

My mother and her 3 sisters have A.O.C's complexion more or less while her 5 brothers are all dark skinned dominicans. My grandfather was dark skinned and my grandmother has a Redbone complexion. If you see all their grandchildren, they range from light to dark.

That's literally the majority of dominican families, we are a mix of 3 different groups of people and it shows. Thats why a lot of dominicans just call themselves DOMINICAN and not black.

It doesn't mean they deny having dark skin, or our african roots. But we don't separate ourselves by skin color the way people in the United States do and that shyt drives ya nuts on this site. We are proud of our unique identity/culture and independence as a country. You go to D.R and it's just a mix of colors living amongst themselves rich/poor doesnt matter. No segregation, no racial inequality none of that bullshyt as much as ppl like to think

Puerto ricans have the same racial make up as dominicans , they dna just leans a bit harder into their European genes than their African gene. I guarantee A.O.C Is at least 15-30% when it comes to her african genes.

But that's just one spectrum of latinos. Then you have Mexicans. Mexicans and Dominicans/ricans have nothing in common genetic wise, we only share the same language and thats why we are under the latino/hispanic umbrella

This shyt is way more complex than just black and white

Uh...a lot of Spaniards went to both countries?

Are you sure there is no Spanish blood relationships? :patrice:

What's wild is in 20 years, it won't even be a question of whether or not women that look like her are white, the same way we don't bother splitting hairs for Italians or Irish here in the states. They're white.
hispanics are more so identifying as multi racial now

the "white" label is not really the go move for some of them

hispanics are more and more trying to make themselves more ambigous its why you have hispanics even AOC trying to insert themselves as descendents of every group from African slaves, to Tainos, to Jews

they trying to cover all bases. Likely to be such in a middle space that they can play the "Im..." this card anytime they want.

Jumping in and out of identities when they want

This vid is interesting, breaks down how "Hispanic" and Latino identities were political creations and the racial grey area they fall into.. The speaker wrote the booking "Making Hispanics".

Mexicans saw themselves as their own race.

forgotten latino history covers this to the point its his profession

Latino is a giant clusterfukk of groups who do not see themselves as one people.

Mexicans don't even see camaraderie with other "latinos" or that Ricans, Dominicans are their people.

When I win I bring we with me
:coffee:

As I've said multiple times...:yeshrug:
  • Latino is comparable to "Southerner", "Appalachian", etc reginal cultural groupings
  • Hispanic is comparable to Anglophone(English speaking), francophone(French speaking), etc. linguistic groupings
I.E. None of that tells you explicitly about "race". Most people hear Latino / Hispanic and assume Mestizo. This is where the confusion comes from.
