So being a frequent listener to Jim Ross's podcasts, he will repeatedly say that the modern heel is too busy trying to be "cool' (Bray Wyatt, Brock Lesnar etc) and "cool heels" don't really draw money because people don't pay to see them lose... they aren't natural heels like classy freddie Blassie etc etc

when most fans think of "natural heat", they think peoplelike JBL, hardcore Holly, Xpac, Vickie Guerrero, Stephanie McMahon etc etc

so then I ask myself, if Miz's job is to "Draw heat", if you go by the posts in this thread he is probably as hated as anybody in the business...so doesn't that mean he is doing EXACTLY WHAT PEOPLE LIKE JIM ROSS THINK A HEEL SHOULD BE DOING....??

I know he sucks and part of the reason people boo him is because he sucks and is not interesting but who cares WHY they boo.....doesn't it make sense that they hate him and want to see him lose ultimately? does him being trash not make you root for the face to win....

explain to me the difference and why miz is not a good heel...(notice i said heel and not wrestler)

Miz doesn't even get booed. He gets silence
Exactly. Xpac heat is booing the fact that the person is the ring, you dont like them as a performer...you are booing shawn waltman for wasting your time.

Miz heat is not even that. Its zero reaction. Its Jeff Jarrett heat

But doesn't it have the same effect though? People hate the miz. .. so in turn that will benefit whatever babyface is booked against him. ... If you boo because he cuts a vicious promo of insults your hometown or because he sucks. ..ultimately what's the difference. .. heat is heat

Xpac heat is being booed cuz they just don't want to see you in the ring or on tv

A guy like the honkey tonk man sucked but got insane heat and people were willing to pay to see him lost

The Miz gets heat cuz he sucks but nobody gives a shyt about him

Nobody cares if he wins or loses really they just want him out of the ring and off tv

Good heels make you want to see them get their asses kicked. Bad heels make you want to change the channel.

Bam.

Let me flesh this out.

What people who go on and on about "cool heels" don't seem to get is that, before you can desire to see a heel get their ass kicked, you have to want to see the heel first. In other words, the heel has to be interesting, captivating, someone that has something that a crowd can sink their teeth into. A heel that is dull is almost completely useless. A heel that is not captivating (i.e., Miz) is repellant to viewers.

Yes, you run the risk of creating a "cool heel" when creating a bad guy that people want to see. But it's necessary for the sake of creating captivating storylines. There has to be something in a heel's persona that can be, in some way, admired before perverting it. Take Hunter's current run for example. Like him or not, the character is funny. He's light hearted at times, a jokester at others. He's sarcastic, charming, someone that you might want to share a beer with.

However, all of those positive traits get perverted by Hunter's disingenuous nature. He uses those endearing traits to mask the fact that he's still the same vicious, conniving b*stard that he always was, only now he has ridiculous amounts of administrative power in his hands, which both requires him to put on a good face and allows that good face to be seen as a complete falsehood when the story requires it. It's actually really great heel work at times (specifically with Bryan during their WrestleMania build).

Yes, the wrestlers do and should take responsibility for this working and failing. However, one must also look to the writers as well. If you don't give a captivating heel character a chance in storyline to show just how much of a prick he really is, then he will never get over as someone who people want to see get their ass kicked. Moreover, if you don't give the viewers an equally (or more) captivating face character for the heel to work with, then the heel will get cheered. Because, regardless of positioning, the heel is the more interesting character, which people want to see over merely good characters. Daniel Bryan because of his character's traits and storyline, made for an incredibly captivating face, which is part of the reason why Hunter got so much heat against him (there's also the circumstances surrounding Hunter's character to consider here as well. For another example, see Flair/Steamboat). In contrast, Bray Wyatt's character, a manipulator in every way, shape and form, was a much more captivating character than Cena, which, when combined with the fact that the storyline seemed to be built around making Bray look incompetent more than making him look devious, got him over, but not as a heel.

It really isn't hard. I promise.

Mix could be a face and I would feel the same way. He gets apathy from most fans and no one cares about him either way. Like someone already stated, good heels don't make you want to change your channel. It's not his work as a heel that makes people dislike him, and therein lies the problem.

People paid to see Honky lose? Nah...he wasn't a Freebird. He just kept that belt over a year and was extremely annoying and a silly ass finisher.

Cripple H got alot of heat because he's a double talker and supports Cena but legitimately never was really on this Bryan thing until fans did the unthinkable and disregarded the entire product to support him over the whole picture...when Cena and Blandy got less than X Pac heat with WE WANT DIVAS chants at Rumble, the very next night, which was supposed to be all Batista and Blandy, became about Bryan.

And Stephanie and Lana have been heat magnets this year..Stephanie was incredibly over in both Chicago segments with Bryan this year. Shes Become Bryan's arch rival without question. Crowd gets blazing hot when they are both in the ring together.
