I think it's more just the trash writing in season one but I've noticed it can be interpreted that way. Denise Crosby was fine back then though I would have smashed.

I think they didn't really know what to do with her character but they knew there was potential. They killed her off and then they kept trying to bring her back from alternate universes and timelines.
