[quote/ mbewane, post: 5483956, member: 1157"]Nah, I'm not really confused about who I am ethnicity-wise, moreso about where I (if anywhere) "fit".
On second thought I'm not even gonna go too into the whole concept of "c00ning" that is thrown out here because I'm not American and there's nothing really similar (as a concept) in Europe. Your historical explanation makes sense in an american context, but precisely since there were far less slaves on european soil (as opposed to in european colonies) it doesn't really apply back here.[/quote]
I don't think that it applies in the us either. They had the one drop rule that made everybody with a hint of african heritage black. As a result you have "lightskinned" people who are clearly descendents of interracial relationships, but are considered members of the black community. The US and other anglo saxon colonies never had a system that assigned social position according to different shades of blackness as. There never was a mulatto class like there was in Haiti or an intricate colour based caste system like in the spanish colonies. There where white people and non white people and that was about it. If anything, white people display a subconcious preference for lightskinned black people, but being mixed doesn't necessarily mean the colour of your skin is lighter than that of non mixed people or traditional lightskinned blacks. Barak Obama is refused as mixed yet his complexion is that of most african americans, and i doubt that any white person would think of him as one of their own or preferable to other black because he has a white mother.
