They offered him a contract but he rejected it for the max. Trust me, you dont want to diddle around and lose a guy for nothing. Look at the Bulls for a lower scale version of that
He was under contract for another year and he would have been a restricted free agent IIRC. They made a gamble and lost period. Funny thing is he wasn't even asking for the max. He was only asking for $4 mil more than they were offering.
Understood....but I dont know if I accept the argument that paying harden the max was too burdensome. If you cant financially keep a trio like Harden/Westbrook/KD together, then I think you should think twice about running an NBA franchise. I think duke just tried to get slick, and thought Harden wasnt worth the money (after shtting the bed in the finals), and he could get away with being cheap by substituting his production, and saving money.
This is exactly what he was doing and to be all the way real I co-signed the shyt at the time. After that Finals disappearing act I thought he was crazy to be tripping over $4 mil. After last season I can't front I was wrong and the Thunder look like they have fukked themselves not only out of having possibly the GOAT perimeter trio and winning championships but it looks like they are gonna fukk around lose KD too. All for $4 million.
