seems to be thriving to me

I'm over 6 years out now but it doesn't feel the same, and it was starting to feel different towards the end of my time in.
I imagine the mf's really eating well are people who grow it or those who can cop loads from growers----these levels always existed, but they weren't the only people who could eat. The space for mid level dealers or small time sellers is pretty much squeezed dry....at least thats how it seems from outside looking in.
I was 15 when I started selling weed in '04 and from that point thru the next decade, give or take, you could still run it up as a mid-level dealer. At my peak I was getting pounds of different strains/exotic, from different sources, for like $500, and bringing them out east (NY, VA, NC, GA) where I could quintuple my investment if I wanted. But I was able to offer nikkas prices well below street value out east, where even thru the mid-2010s you could get pounds of some shyt off for up to $3k.
I noticed the game changing around the mid-10s or so, East Coast started becoming saturated with "plugs" from elsewhere, and more people got into growing their own shyt. Specifically the places I was at, was running into people who had connects from Cali or Florida or Canada, and everybody claiming they could get the shyt cheaper from another guy. Alot if that was gamesmanship, I remember being among the first guys in multiple areas, having weed at $2k, $2200, etc. I always had the low, so when all these other mf's came saying they boy from _____ had it lower, that was a shift....it definitely wasn't always alot if cats tied in with nikkas with real weight.
Also mid-10s brought in that stupid packaging shyt, got damn that shyt annoyed me. Slapping shyt in video game boxes or candy bags, created a different kinda aesthetic and tricked buyers into some shyt it wasn't. I remember 2016 was like the first time somebody told me that if my shyt wasnt in one of them silly packages/boxes, it wasnt real fire
California, Florida, Texas, Canadian nikkas gotta take responsibility for some of this, because a point came that mad nikkas heard it was sweet out east, so nikkas started selling dirt shyt that they could get off like it was top shelf out east. It was all correlated with how the profit margins shrunk and the quality of weed declined.
Also people out east in some cases started treating weed like a hardcore drug and robbing and shooting nikkas for it, that wasn't always the case either...
I had some really good times and I had a good run. I was never a grower, never cared about that, but growers always ate. For a stretch I had this Asian father/daughter duo who lived off Marysville Blvd, when I bopped thru the city I'd stop by and get hooked up and ship out east. Had relationships with a handful of growers over time too. The growers always ate, but the fun times in this shyt was having access to different growers and knowing you could kill out east without even charging full price.
You're probably right that its still thriving, I'm out the loop. But I can't imagine that profit margins are what they were, you used to be able to run it up like a mf with ease. Good fukking times!
