It's an assist if an NBA says it is.

Look at the top 10 assist guys, they all definitely past the eyeball test.

What kind of logic is this?

:gucci:

Assist are subjective. Whoever is manning the scorers table that night decideds. So I look at the top 10 leaders in assist and based on what I think of their play based on what I've seen with my own eyes I then determine if the assist stats matchup with that and make sense.

Gonna need to see an actual NBA definition of what consists of a proper and improper assist. Because the lines have been blurred for decades....

At this point who cares? Its really not that serious.

It's roughly the same idea as the continuation rule on fouls. The intention of the rule was to recognize when a shot was occuring or in the process of occuring.

When they try to apply hard rules to it, everything falls apart. Like the unwritten rule that if you didn't dribble again after contact, it was a continuation foul even if you didn't decide to shoot until after the contact and/or blatantly traveled after the whistle. They finally had to rein it in this year because it had gone so far away from its original intent. For assists, this two dribble bullshyt people are mentioning makes no sense because it doesn't define the direction or timing of the dribbles or the amount of time that can elapse overall.

If a big man gets deep position under the basket and a point guard throws to him and he can drop it in, that's obviously an assisted basket. If a big man is at the high post and receives a pass and then has to juke and pumpfake and create his own shot, that's not an assist at all but they've been giving that one to Lonzo and other point guards. Assists should really just apply to catch and shoots and passes that lead the receiver straight to the basket :manny:

no they gave him these same types of phantom assists. how do you give a fake steal? you cant create a turnover out of thin air, its a change of possession
I think he's talking about how the scorers sometimes credit the steal to the person who causes the loose ball and sometimes they credit it to whoever secured it.

Except that's never been the case, ever. With guys like Ai and Miller, you can see where they give leeway, to be fair, I don't think the "rule" was enforced much.

This is very different than that Lonzo Ball assist. In the example yo posted the player receiving the ball had a clear path to the basket and didn't come across a defender until he was AT the basket.

In Lonzo's assists the players that received the ball still had to get past his defender to even get near the basket

You should get .5 assist if your pass leads the receiver into a free throw situation.
