That’s the game, movie was not a big budget film. He’s got massive paychecks after because of this, it’s the long game

He could’ve said no to the part if the pay was a big deal at the time. Producers of an indie movie going big aren’t going to go back and pay everyone extra :heh:

You put up with measly checks because you love the craft as cliche as it sounds.

I have a close friend who acts out in California, and he's done plays and small projects because he likes the art of acting, and commercials for the check.

Like he said he had to pay his rent. :yeshrug:

Most of us would take the bad deal when the landlord or finance company is at the door.

At least he got Iron Man and a few other films which likely paid more. A lot actors didn’t get to turn lemons into lemonade. 🍋

Hustle & Flow was made on less 5 mill iirc, sounds about right for an indie pic. A lot of these bigger pictures don't pay out straight away either, a lot of actors get paid on the back end because of the potential for a bigger check.

John Witherspoon had an interview from years ago where talked about when he was starting out, if he got a gig (a couple thousand) he'd immediately just give most of it to landlord. So he'd pay his rent like months in advance/out and whatever else he needed he'd hustle for, just so long as he had a roof he'd be good.

Small budget flick with no upfront distribution and most of the $$$ is going to production costs.

And he needed whatever they offered upfront or else he would’ve asked for something on the backend instead of the $12k

Hustle and Flow made $24 million against about $3-4 million in costs so he could’ve walked off with at least $700k if he didn’t need whatever they gave him. That’s just the game.

I gotta homeboy who lives in LA and does a little acting. He said you’d be surprised how many actors have a bunch of side gigs they do to keep the lights on. My boy has had some small roles in some big tv shows but most of his income comes from doing voiceovers and appearing as a character in video games

I’m not gonna put his business out there but he’s been a default character in a couple big games. A bunch of us on this site have played with the nikka
