The issue seems to be that people think it's easy to get paid "on the back end"

What back end?

Hollywood Accounting is a famous term to explain how they manipulate numbers so that "on paper" movies aren't even profitable. So they rarely have to pay anyone on "the back end"

He was in one iron man film :mjlol:

He's probably made most of his money from Empire. People aren't trying to hear his shaky ass voice trying to intimidate someone anymore.

For most actors the dream job is getting series regular on a network show. Even if it only lasts a couple years thats the most money majority of actors will ever see. It's a lot of work and brutal schedule but you get paid a lot per ep then you used to get syndication money as well.

Small budget flick with no upfront distribution and most of the $$$ is going to production costs.

And he needed whatever they offered upfront or else he would’ve asked for something on the backend instead of the $12k

Hustle and Flow made $24 million against about $3-4 million in costs so he could’ve walked off with at least $700k if he didn’t need whatever they gave him. That’s just the game.
With DVD sales and streaming/broadcasting rights, that movie made more than $24 million. Never trust Hollywood accounting. They are the GOATs of book cooking.

Him staying in the MCU would have been a hot mess

Hustle & Flow was made on less 5 mill iirc, sounds about right for an indie pic. A lot of these bigger pictures don't pay out straight away either, a lot of actors get paid on the back end because of the potential for a bigger check.

John Witherspoon had an interview from years ago where talked about when he was starting out, if he got a gig (a couple thousand) he'd immediately just give most of it to landlord. So he'd pay his rent like months in advance/out and whatever else he needed he'd hustle for, just so long as he had a roof he'd be good.
Yep. As an emerging artist I attest to doing that. It's hard out here in the arts. It's a real oversaturated market tbt. Especially visually art world. I will tell you alot if artists make it due to having a story...well the black ones atleast. I can't tell you shyt bout white artists but they are def in the nepotism crowd/sector and good ol network

Hustle & Flow was a lower budget film that the studio took a risk on producing/distributing. It became a hit and got nominated for Oscars but that wasn’t expected when they shot the film. Getting paid 12k at the time for that isn’t CRAZY.

He acted his ass off in it and got recognition that allowed him to leverage his name/brand into bigger roles and bigger checks. It works like this in almost any form of the entertainment industry. At one point, he was one of the highest paid actors on TV. I’m not arguing that the game isn’t fukked up but that this is nothing new.

I know a lot of artists, musicians and photographers in particular. The only ones who do really well are the ones who sell products or became producers and songwriters. The wealthiest ones are the ones who sell courses, teaching others or selling items that people in their field will buy. It’s really hard to make a high income by just doing your art.

Damn I always thought "movie money " was different than music money. But then again when you think about there are usually only 10-15 big names actors/ actresses that get the big dollars. I wonder how much them "Tubi" actors get off them movies? They probably get some t-shirts and an Oxtail plate.
