I think writers/producers/directors be up watching TV late night, and if an older movie comes on, they decide to remake it. Jacob's Ladder was on a couple of months ago.

Next up is The Serpent and the Rainbow, The Princess Bride, Willow, Young Guns (not Billy the Kid movie, but another Young Guns), Stand by Me, The Goonies, The Lost Boys, ET, Gattaca, Misery (made for TV), The People Under the Stairs, finally start shooting for The Warriors remake....and can't forget about Phantasm

It wasn't even a 'horror' movie. It's like a creepier version of The Sixth Sense. More atmospheric and depressing than scary.

This just proves what we've all known for quite some time:
