I think you misinterpreted my post. what I'm saying is, in repressive backward dictatorships where all critical thought and dissident voices are stamped out, where leftist, liberal and pro-democratic activists were routinely disappeared or suicided: the Mosque was the only place in the community where saying the wrong thing didn't get you a visit from the Mukhabarat. I know being born and raised in a secular, functional society you have a hard time empathizing, but Muhammed for many of these people is viewed not just as a messenger of God and a Prophet, but a source of personal and national pride. and it's going to take COMPLETE and TOTAL economic and political liberation for them to move past this mindstate.

But I didn't grow up in a secular society as much as you think. While paling in comparison to Islamic countries, I grew up in a Latin America country and family that was very much poisoned by Roman Catholicism. I mean lighting candles, praying to Saints, superstitious, somber, sinful shyt.
