It’s more comparable to Austin Butler in the Elvis movie.
The direction called for Jaafar to just replicate and imitate Mike, he wasn’t given material to show off emotional depth or do anything more than smile/look sad.

His performance doesn’t deserve it but the academy is weird.
They might see the success the movie is having, the fact it’s a MJ biopic, he did a good job of replicating his look + voice, and just give it to him.
