Why do people here like to pretend that colorism isn't real? OP brought up a valid question in the casting of Will Smith for this role. Just because you push your head underground doesn't mean certain issues will go away.

Technically as fans y'all make the movies, because if y'all don't watch it, they won't make it. If the 20 million or so black people in America came as a collective and said we want an actor that accurately portrays the physical characteristics of the doctor they would do it overnight, studios don't want those problems.

The issue has been swept under the rug so many times, it would have been incredibly easy for this movie to be swallowed up too, it was better that Will Smith, one of the most well-known Black actors, to play the character and attract more attention to this issue.
Just chiming in with my opinion. This is real normal for Hollywood. They pick a marketable actor for the roles regardless of race or sex. The actor could be taller, skinnier, fatter, lighter, darker, older, or younger. The only time there's an exception is when Hollywood nepotism is giving a fat check to one of their own.

People make divisive threads all the time, take a look at that Black Male Privilege thread, which successful pitched black men against black women. But why is this being dismissed? OP complaint is legit. It seems as they are using lighter skin actors and actresses to influence more white people into seeing movies about us. Will Smith and whoever this chick is a much safer bet than say Forest Whitaker and Viola Davis, because their complexions are much "safer", easier to relate to. I don't understand why a darker skin actor or actress could not be used since these type of movies aren't exactly blockbusters, probably will on par to Last Kings of Scotland.
In my opinion, movies about us should show our diversity, not the same old light skin people- i.e. Halle berry and Will Smith. Not lightskin bashing, lol, because I am of a lighter complexion.
