no, the object is to score the basketball. efficiency is irrelevant if you SCORE more than the other opponent. If this wasnt the case, it would be impossible to beat a team shooting a much higher fg% but it happens ALL the damn time. So efficiency is just another stat, the stat that matters at the end of the day is points. If Team A shoots 37% and has 85 points and Team B shoots 45% and has 81 points. Its pretty clear efficiency takes the backseat.
Jordan never went into a game thinking "ok I got to shoot 50%, and be efficicient. Thats my goal." NO. He went in with the mindset of scoring at all cost. Thats why he has so many 12-33, 9-29 statlines. THe object of the game is to score. Of course every player wants to be efficient because that means more points, but efficiency is NOT the end be all of basketball. Teams win shooting 40% all the time. Lakers won Game 7 of the finals shooting 38%. Let that sink in.
Allen Iverson won an MVP and got his team to the FINALS shooting 38%. If efficiency was the end-be-all goal of basketball, that would not be possible. Many superstars have thrown efficiency in the bushes. Try again.
Goddamn this is the best argument I've seen regarding this topic on this forum. dap
