to me lyricism means not sacrificing one for the other

like being lyrical to me obviously means complex rhyme patterns metaphors wordplay punchlines hooks

while still being smart enough to tell a story and still make sense to me is lyricism.

i dont know why most people think that u can' tell a story and still be lyrical or vice versa.

u can do both and it can be done.

Rite, a "chopped up" convo using patterns:

To me lyricism involves: Metaphors, syllable rhyming, punchlines, story telling, painting a picture, cleverness. It most encompass at least one of those elements. There's multiple ways to be lyrical. AZ is lyrical and Jay is lyrical but their rhyme styles are nothing alike. Nas is lyrical and Fab is lyrical and their rhyme styles are nothing alike.
I base it on literary devise usage. The more proficient, the more lyrical. That said, I don't see too many lyricists out there.

Whats your opinion on Eminem:lupe:
He's good at multi's because he has the liberty to literally say anything. I consider it cheating. Often times he has worthless segments of bars simply to continue the rhyme, which sometimes is cool, other times not so much.

"murder you hoes worse than a convertable flippin vertical nose first with the top off landing upside down"

the fukk is flippin vertical nose first, really?

See to me...thas not lyricism, that's a different category. Method Man can be lyrical but most times he's known for his flow. Same for CL smooth and most New rappers. Young Thug got hella flow but lyrically he's a light weight.

If u wanna take the actual dictionary definition of lyrical then there's no better then tupac.

But people will tell u the term lyrical has a different definition when it comes to rap. Dunno if that's true or they are just trying to fit their agenda

It has to do with phrasing, every sentence has to have a melodic theme, but not just be the same melody over and over again, or else it's just chanting.

it just so happens the 'lyrical' rappers also all use metaphors and similes, but that isn't what makes them lyrical, because all rappers use metaphors, but not all rappers are lyrical. And it's not a complex use of those techniques, because not all lyrical rappers are that complex, Too $hort, Easy-E.

some rappers can make you listen to them because they have some crazy stories, other rappers have found their identity, know who they are and are comfortable with their voice, so they could read the phone book and make it interesting, those are the lyrical rappers.
