I keep hearing about how californias gonna run out of water in a year if the drought continues...Is this just international media sensationalism or is there truth in this. It seems like a serious national issue considering that california produces half of the US fruit . Any californians here

Well they won't run out of water, but the prices and taxes will skyrocket for bottled water. Its been like four years from what the news said. Eventually though they will get enough rain to temper the drought down, but until then there will be serious wildfires and then mudslides when the rain does come back.

Because what happens is that the soil gets loose, and airy when the moisture leaves. So when the rain comes back, the dirt is unstable and you get your titanic mudslides.

Well see thats the issue they are having. They do have running water, but because of the reservoirs going dry, the State Government is charging hefty fines if they exceed the daily limit.

They got that huge ass oil spill as well, the media has been hush hush about that.

The pipeline that leaked thousands of gallons of oil on the California coast was the only pipe of its kind in the county not required to have an automatic shut-off valve because of a court fight nearly three decades ago, a county official said.

The original owner of the pipeline skirted the Santa Barbara County requirement by successfully arguing in court in the late 1980s that it should be subject to federal oversight because the pipeline is part of an interstate network, said Kevin Drude, deputy director of the county's Energy and Minerals Division. Auto shut-off valves are not required by federal regulators.

Then this happened two days ago

Fremont police say vandals attacked an inflatable dam on Alameda Creek that resulted in the loss of nearly 50 million gallons of water.

Police believe that those responsible entered a restricted area sometime on Thursday morning and intentionally damaged the dam.

“The dam, which is instrumental to the Alameda County Water District’s water supply operations, suffered irreversible damage,” police said.

According to police, more than 150 acre-feet of water – or 49 million gallons – washed past the destroyed dam and into the San Francisco Bay.

With California enduring a crippling four-year drought and no signs of immediate relief, the water in the Alameda Creek was to have been percolated into the Niles Cone Groundwater Basin for use by residents and businesses in Fremont, Newark, and Union City as a critical water supply.

“This amount of water is enough to supply the needs of approximately 500 homes for one year,” police said.

District staff was able to quickly open upstream diversions, allowing water which would have been impounded behind the dam to flow into nearby groundwater recharge facilities, thus eliminating further water loss.

“This is a very significant loss of water under any circumstances, and more so in the drought conditions we are experiencing,” said ACWD General Manager Robert Shaver. “It is an utterly senseless, destructive, and wasteful thing to do.”
