Maradona wipes the floor with Messi. Messi has had the advantage of playing with the same club and players since he was 12 years old. Compound that with the fact that these players, xavi and iniesta, also happened to be two of the best creative midfielders of the last generation it's hard to say he's better than Maradona who was known for his ability to carry average teams on his back toward glory (Napoli and Argentina 86). Messi has scored more goals and won more club titles but the overarching factors when compared to Maradona still place him in 2nd. Furthermore, as far as Argentines are concerned, no WC title? No comparison to Maradona.
Good point. I do think it's worth taking into consideration that the dynamic of winning a world cup isn't the same. All the most promising players travel to europe at a young age.... so they might not love they home countries like that :manny:

Combine that with the fact that modern day soccer is dependant on complex coaching tactics and team chemistry . One player can't win a world cup.

The Yay
maradona is the last player to carry his national team by mostly himself.

pele is all time great but he played in a different era. those brazil teams were pretty talented too. on other hand pele is a huge icon.

its tough to say, honestly. maradona was one of a kind. pele was arguably a better all-around player.

you can tell messi got that ether when argentina lost in the finals this year. he carried argentina something serious last year and had they won the WC hed likely be considered the GOAT by a ton of people, or at least surpass Maradona

That's the goat warm up vid. Pele is more iconic but maradona is my cocaine sniffing hand balling GOAT. There is. Vid of Zidane talking about how maradona on warm ups would hit the post Nd have ball come back to him 5 times in a row
Nobody could fukk with him on technical skills.
Platini said that "whatever Zidane could do with the ball, Maradona could it with an orange"... and Zidane agreed:mjlol:
Ooooo very difficoult question....i say Maradona for his personality and cause he gas won with Little teams messi Wins with barcelona
One of the greatest myths of soccer.
Maradona's Napoli team was like Manchester City today: A mediocre team that suddenly got lots of money from new owners (in this case, Mafia money) and started buying superstars left and right.
They bought Maradona from Barcelona for a record fee, then surrounded him with Brazil's top stricker and midfielder (Careca and Alemao), Italian internationals (Ferrara, De Napoli, Carnevale, Zola, Giordano, Crippa, etc)... That team was loaded.
Their greatest failure was the CL.

Great responses in here. Hard to really pick as the eras were different. I will say those Santos teams with Pele leading the way beat the best Europe had to offer for many years so he did prove himself in Europe if you ask me. A better thread would be Pele vs The Black Panther bka Eusebio.

Napoli wons first championship (scudetto) in 1987 president was Corrado Ferlaino, a builder, no mafia....in that time napoli with a stadium with 90 000 people (after 1990 80 000 now 50 000) was one of richer team in italy....napoli was not best team has only two great football player...Maradona and Bagni
Giordano and carnevale was two good player and other was only normal players
juventus in 1987 has platini, laudrup, serena, cabrini...inter has rumenigge , bergomi, altobelli...
serie A was hardest championship in world at that time, and napoli with maradona won cause maradona makes other mediocre players better with his personality
messi (great player) has not this personality...he play only if barcelona play good only if xavi gives him the ball like he want, where he want , when he want
messi is not a leader ..in barcelona iniesta puyol are leaders...in argentina mascherano is a leader...for this maradona is the best

I

:rudy:

But seriously like Real Talk did you see Andre and Jordan's fathers prime or you going off hearsay? Coz it's one thing saying his name it's totally different to seeing him play back in the early 90' s. And if you was like 3 when this happened then :camby:

Coz I remember the hype of Nil Lamptey as well.

I was young when abedi, yeaboah and all them were playing but ive heard the stories. He is a ghanaian legend. It's more about being Ghanaian and having pride..

I often switch between the two...

Pele won 3 world cups, thats a madness.

Maradona though, 86 is a fukkrie... then he took argentina to the finals in 1990. Credentials are there

I'll say Pele but neither was in my time so ....

Messi not a leader? he captained Argentina to a world cup final and hes been running barca since before he drunk the coke infront of pep :sas2: Don't believe that media image of the shy messi, the guys got an ego as big as CR7

@2meo Henry>>>>>>>Shearer. I'm not even an arsenal fan, but Henry won everything as a player, world cup, CL etc etc
