I sure do remember when phone companies charged you per text. And I'm damn sure that you got taxed for it. But now that texting is "unlimited" and a set fee, the gov't is not getting enough tax revenue from it. And if CA is saying that text messaging is not a information service, but in fact a communications service, then what about the other services, such as: email, facebook, google plus, twitter, instagram, whatsapp, iMessage, and skype? Those are all solidly communications services. At best, you could argue dual-use because of its flexibility as a platform.

I'm all for the poor having basic and guaranteed access to communication and being able to communicate. But this is not the wave. CA's tax system is in grave need of an overhaul. This tax idea is certainly evidence of that.

Speaking of taxes, industrial hemp was made legal nationwide. Also, it seems you can't deliver marijuana or marijuana related products to over 40% of CA? Why? Los Angeles Times - We are currently unavailable in your region That clearly is messing up their tax revenue/profit.

Fresno, CA.
:ohlawd:Raising taxes to "help the poor" highlights the inevitability of gentrification. Both sides(:lolbron:) push policies that increase the cost of living and displace negroes... one just believes its helping:deadrose:
I bet east coast liberals think blacks are doing well in CA under these progressive policies :bryan:
Tax all communication to help the poor...:bryan::bryan::bryan:

It's been almost 2 days. More than enough time to know this is a federal law from almost a 100 years ago.

But the onus was later passed on states to enforce.

As such states are still beholden to FCC classifications.

As such the FCC determined what's app, Facebook messenger, i message, etc are classified as information services--and wrongly I might add.

But don't worry, this law likely won't take off due to the FCC being lobbied to wrongly classify texts as informational as well.

It is a form of socialism because the taxes from the text are going to be used to help pay for telecommunication services for poor ppl.

The corporations are actually lobbying against it.

It’s absurd and tone deaf.

It's a form of terrible tax policy.

For those of you who still have landline phone service, do you get charged per local call or per long distance call anymore? If no for both, then not taxing for text messages should fall under that same rule.

It can’t be both?

Wouldn't socialism be giving those poor people stock in those companies? The dividends from the stock then could be used, if they choose to, to subsidize their costs. Plus, as owners they could get employee/owner discounts.
